Summertime Acupuncture for Kids
Great news! Schools are either out or about to be out, so kids can now enjoy all of summer's great activities. With manageable schedules that aren't packed with extracurricular activities, homework, and school events, summer is the perfect time to introduce your child to the benefits of Acupuncture.
Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, and Herbal Medicine are not just for adults, they are excellent treatment options for children too. Children have extraordinary healing abilities, and their bodies can recover faster than adults. Kids' bodies have incredible blood circulation and are receptive to energy, so they respond quickly to Acupuncture treatments, helping their bodies become more balanced with each session. By prioritizing preventive care and wellness, children can avoid chronic conditions later in life, and parents can have less stress knowing their child's systems are functioning optimally. Below are some commonly asked questions about Pediatric Acupuncture!
What Age Groups Can Receive Pediatric Acupuncture?
Gentle and non-invasive (needle-free) techniques are utilized for newborns to Age 17. Teens may feel more comfortable laying with acupuncture needles, but it is always up to the child.
Does My Child Need to Lay Still For Acupuncture?
Absolutely NOT! Most kids play or draw while the treatment is happening, and older kids and teens may lie quietly for 15-20 minutes if they choose. In my treatment room, the child is in charge of their treatment. For instance, we find another alternative if they do not want ear seeds during that treatment. I never force anything on a child and create a safe space where they can enjoy a doctor's visit.
Does My Child Need to be Sick for Treatment?
No, as Acupuncture is also used as preventative care. Prevention is always better than needing to correct an imbalance in the body. Regular Acupuncture treatments strengthen the body, calm the mind and support the immune system.

Will Acupuncture Needles Be Used on My Child?
Acupuncture is not just about using needles. It is a form of Chinese Medicine that encompasses various modalities. Acupuncturists have other techniques besides needles, especially when treating children. I usually avoid using needles on kids unless they want to try it. Even then, they are often surprised to find that Acupuncture with needles is painless.
I want to clarify a misconception. Acupuncture needles differ from hypodermic needles in that they are single-use, sterile, and as thin as a strand of hair. Additionally, they are often painless. I always prioritize the comfort and consent of my pediatric patients in my practice. I only use needles if they are ready and willing to try. I have a variety of other methods to support their healing process as well.
Some non-needle techniques include:
What Happens During My Child's First Acupuncture Treatment?
My initial consultation and treatment will last 45 minutes, allowing me to connect with your child and obtain all necessary information about their health history. During this time, I will assess their overall health, sleep, appetite, mood, and energy levels. I use Chinese Medicine Diagnostic tools such as checking their pulse and observing their tongue. Then, we will discuss treatment goals. The acupuncture treatment will take approximately 10-15 minutes, as children typically respond more quickly than adults. I encourage them to rest for a few minutes after the treatment. I provide personalized recommendations for a treatment plan and suggestions for diet, acupressure, or other remedies that may be used at home. Follow-up visits only require 30 minutes.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
If you undergo any physical changes due to stress, improper diet, trauma, or lack of sleep, your body systems may get imbalanced. Acupuncture can help restore balance by accessing your nervous system and brain waves. It brings them back into harmony, allowing your body to function correctly and heal independently.

Can Siblings Attend the Session?
While one parent and child are ideal for the treatment, I understand this is not always possible. I provide toys and activities for siblings during treatment time. Sometimes, both kids are treated together!
